Welcome to Day 84 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge. Today I’m talking about a topic that’s tough for every entrepreneur: Laying off employees. It’s an unpleasant but unfortunately necessary part of entrepreneurship. Learn about my experiences and thoughts on how to approach layoffs the right way and what mistakes to avoid.

The Difficult Decision – Layoffs as an Unavoidable Part of the Cycle

Layoffs are, unfortunately, a part of the entrepreneurial journey. No matter how hard you try to hire the right people, sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Whether it’s due to performance issues, cost pressures, or restructuring—there are many reasons why you might need to let employees go. It’s crucial to remember that these decisions should not be taken lightly, as behind every job is a person with dreams, fears, and goals.

Preparation and Communication – The Key to Respectful Handling

When you have to lay someone off, it’s essential to prepare well and get straight to the point. I always start such conversations by clearly stating the situation: “Look, this won’t be an easy conversation. It’s about letting you go today.” This way, both sides know right away what’s going on, and there’s no unnecessary tension. Empathy is key here—it’s tough for you as a leader, but it’s even harder for the person losing their job.

Empathy and Professionalism – How to Conduct Layoffs Properly

Whether you’re laying off an individual or an entire department, the most important thing is to remain respectful and empathetic. I recommend always having HR or a colleague present during these conversations to avoid misunderstandings and ensure a professional process. It’s important to me that the affected employees are treated fairly, even if the decision is unavoidable.

Looking Ahead – How We Move Forward as a Team

The past few months have been tough, but also full of progress. Our company faced significant challenges at the beginning of the 90 days, but through hard work, we’ve managed to stabilize and lay a solid foundation for the future. Now, we need to focus on reducing costs to ensure that our business is sustainable in the long term. This is also important for you as a customer because it ensures that we can continue to operate in the market.

Conclusion

Layoffs are never easy, neither for you as a leader nor for those affected. But sometimes, they are necessary to secure the company and the jobs that remain.

See you tomorrow for Day 85!
