Welcome to Day 83 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge. Today it’s all about the two frequently mentioned CEO types: Wartime and Peacetime CEOs. What are their different challenges, in which company phases do you need which type, and what’s the type I belong to? That and much more, in this article.

Wartime CEO vs. Peacetime CEO

There are two crucial phases in entrepreneurship: peacetime, where everything flourishes and grows, and wartime, where tough decisions must be made. In peacetime, it’s helpful to sit back and let the business grow without constantly making new changes. But in recent months, there has been little peacetime for me. The last 10 months were marked by challenges that repeatedly forced me to act as a “Wartime CEO.”

A Wartime CEO must be able to make difficult decisions, even if they make no one happy. These decisions are often necessary to keep the company alive at all. Over the past months, I’ve had to make these tough decisions repeatedly, and only through these decisions are we still here today.

The Art of Decision-Making

Why is it so important to make the right decisions in both peacetime and wartime? The answer lies in the fact that each phase of a business requires different leadership skills. In peacetime, it’s often about letting the company run smoothly without constantly intervening. In wartime, however, you must be ready to take firm action and implement necessary measures, even if they are uncomfortable.

A good example of this is the decision to stop bridging. This decision was anything but easy, as I knew it wasn’t in the customers’ best interest. But there were regulatory reasons and business risks that made this step necessary. Such decisions naturally cause frustration, but they are often needed to protect the company and ensure long-term success.

Conclusion

Over the last 83 days, I’ve learned that it’s not easy to be either a Wartime or a Peacetime CEO. Both roles require different skills and approaches. But regardless of which phase you’re in, it’s important to make the right decisions and guide your company through the challenges.

I hope that my experiences and insights will help you better understand your role as a leader and prepare you to make the right decisions at the right moments.

Take care, and have a successful start to the week!
