Welcome to day 62 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge. Today I want to take you on a journey through the creative process of product development. We’ll talk about brainstorming for a completely new product: What tips & tricks do I have for this? What does the creative process look like? How do you make the final decisions? Let’s jump right in and see how innovative ideas are developed.
Step-by-Step to a New Product
The first step in product development is to step out of the daily routine. Organize an offsite meeting, perhaps in a nice breakfast café, where you and your team can brainstorm undisturbed. A full day or a weekend is perfect for working intensively on new ideas.
Who should be involved?
The team size depends on the size of your company. In smaller teams, everyone can participate, but in larger companies, it makes sense to select 5-7 people from different departments. Choose employees from marketing, product, engineering, legal, and finance. It’s important that these people are close to the product and the customers and are willing to share their ideas openly.
The Morning: Unleashing Creativity
Start the day with a relaxed breakfast to loosen the mood. Then get down to business: collecting ideas. At this stage, the motto is “Throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.” Everyone should feel free to express their thoughts without fear of judgment. Different perspectives are crucial here to generate innovative and diverse ideas.
The Afternoon: Structuring Ideas
After a collective lunch to let the gathered ideas sink in, the afternoon is dedicated to structuring. Filter and evaluate what is feasible. Here, legal and financial aspects play a role. What competencies are available in the team? Where are we lacking skills? Based on these criteria, a selection is made.
Avoiding Mistakes and Making Decisions
A common mistake is to involve too many people in the ideation process or to have participants who are afraid to voice their opinions. Don’t judge ideas too early; let them mature first. By the end of the day, there should be 4-5 promising concepts left.
The final selection is made by the decision-maker, based on feasibility, risk, and available resources. It’s important to be bold and make clear decisions. Sometimes this means making a radical pivot and going in completely new directions – just like Twitter once did.
Conclusion
Developing new products is not an easy process but an incredibly important one. It requires creativity, courage, and the ability to take risks. What completely new products would you like to see from us? Let me know! I’m curious about your ideas.
See you tomorrow for Day 63.
