Welcome to day 61 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge. Today I would like to talk about an important topic that is often neglected in our digital world: fasting. And no, I’m not just talking about classic fasting, where you abstain from food, but also digital fasting, dopamine fasting and abstaining from constant stimuli. You can find out about my personal experiences in this article.

Why Fast?

Sometimes I find it honestly hardest to fast for just a few days. I find fasting for a week easier because the hunger feeling eventually goes away. Of course, fasting for a week has the downside of extremely low energy levels. These are things you have to consider. But it’s not just about food; it’s also about digital fasting and dopamine fasting, where you minimize stimuli.

Digital Fasting: A Trend

There’s a pretty crazy trend going on right now. Have you seen the video on YouTube where people sit in an economy class flight for the entire flight just staring at the screen, watching how much longer the flight is? There are extreme versions where you can’t eat, talk, or listen to anything. You just sit there. Imagine an 8-hour flight from Frankfurt to New York. What’s worse: an 8-hour hike or an 8-hour flight sitting? Rationally, the hike should be worse because you’re exerting yourself. But for me, doing nothing is harder.

My Experience with Digital Detox

I’ve experienced this long-term once in my life. We took a boat trip to Cocos Island, one of the most remote islands in the Pacific. From Costa Rica, it’s a one and a half to two-day journey. There’s no internet or phone connection. In the first couple of days, you panic because you have no contact with the outside world. But eventually, you settle down and realize how good it feels.

The Key is Balance

Interestingly, some of the best marathon runners, like Kipchoge, can just sit and do nothing while everyone else is on their phones. In today’s business world, it’s crucial to find balance. After these 90 days, I’ll definitely take some time off to detox completely and regain my energy.

Conclusion

These are my thoughts on detox and fasting. Next week, I’ll talk more about it and share my experiences from my wife’s birthday celebration and our digital detox. If you have any questions or feedback, let me know. Also, check out the crazy videos of people just sitting in a plane.
