Welcome to day 60 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge. We are now in the last third of the challenge, which I have been fully committed on every day so far. As a result, I keep getting questions about whether I have a “work-life balance” and whether I’m enjoying my life at all. An exciting and much-discussed topic… in this article, I reveal my thoughts on this!
The Three Major Areas of Work-Life Balance
When it comes to work-life balance, most people consider three major areas of their lives: career, self, and relationships.
1. Career: This area includes finances, career, and everything related to one’s job. Most people enjoy their work, even if it’s not their ultimate passion. They work gladly, but it’s not something that would make them happy working 100 hours a week.
2. Self: This includes learning, hobbies, spiritual health, emotions, and more. It’s important to take time for yourself to stay mentally and physically healthy.
3. Relationships: This area includes friends, family, and children. Relationships are a crucial part of life and require time and attention.
The Mistake of Society: Lack of Delayed Gratification
A major mistake many people make is the lack of delayed gratification. They look at work-life balance on a daily or weekly basis, instead of over longer periods. Successful people, on the other hand, often focus on one of these areas for years or even decades, achieving above-average results.
For example: If you heat water to 99 degrees, not much happens. But at 100 degrees, the water turns into steam, and something big happens. It’s the same with results in life. Many people never reach this critical degree because they don’t persevere long enough.
My Own Life Path
In the first ten years of my adult life, I focused on sports, hobbies, and travel. I visited nearly 100 countries, experienced a lot as a professional kite surfer, and had no committed relationships. Money wasn’t my priority; I just enjoyed life. This period made me the calm and balanced person I am today.
Later, I focused on building businesses and finances. I know that at some point, I’ll shift my focus to my children and family. And after that, there will be another phase.
Long Time Horizon: The Key to Success
The key to a successful work-life balance is a long time horizon. The longer you focus on one area, the more you’ll achieve in it. You need to find your purpose in it, enjoy it, and bring energy to it. It won’t always be perfect, but long-term focus will lead to above-average results.
Most people fear delayed gratification because they live in the here and now. They don’t want to sacrifice for the long-term. But that’s exactly what’s necessary to achieve a true sense of work-life balance. For me, balance isn’t something I strive for daily or weekly, but over years.
