Welcome to day 57 of the 90-day comeback challenge. Today it’s all about how much you should be “hands on” as a manager: Is a good leader always up front and setting the tone? Or should you hold back and let your employees do their work as the experts? In this article, you find out how I do it myself as CEO and what principles I follow.

The Challenge of Growth

When a company grows and you start bringing more people into the team, you often face a tricky decision. In a typical startup, where everyone works independently, management is often not the biggest issue. But as the team grows, new structures emerge. It is dangerous to be completely hands off and focus only on managing. Equally problematic is never taking on the role of team lead and always remaining hands on.

Finding the Balance

A good team lead and manager must find the balance between hands off and hands on. You need to know when it’s necessary to dive deeply into processes and when you should give employees space to handle their tasks independently. Successful CEOs like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk mastered this skill.

Concrete Examples from My Daily Life

In recent months, especially with all the disputes, I have been extremely hands on. I have read hundreds of pages of documents myself, even though the lawyers said they could handle it. Why? Because everything was at stake and I wanted to ensure everything was correct.

When launching new apps, I am also hands on. I check designs, product details, buttons, and fonts. It can be confusing for my team when I suddenly dive deeply into a process, but it’s necessary to manage critical points.

The Art of Leadership

It’s important to develop the right sense of timing. You need to learn when it’s time to be hands on and when to let go. This has nothing to do with a lack of trust, but with the necessity of being present in critical moments.

As a leader, it’s crucial to master this balance. If you notice your team leads becoming too distant, you need to intervene. It’s dangerous when they only manage processes and lose touch with the actual tasks.

Conclusion

I hope this insight into my experiences helps you improve your own leadership strategy. If you have any questions, let me know. See you tomorrow!
