Welcome to Day 5 of my 90-Day Comeback Challenge. Today is Sunday, the classic rest day in our work rhythm. But the question is, how do you take a break the right way? Is watching Netflix really a break? In this post, I’ll share my tips and tricks for the best ways to achieve optimal performance.

The Importance of Breaks

Breaks are absolutely essential, whether in professional sports or business. The dosage makes the poison – too little is not good, but too much isn’t either. It’s about taking breaks the right way. In professional sports, breaks are important for muscles; in business, we need “headspace” – mental distance to refocus on other things.

Activities That Don’t Help

There are activities that don’t contribute to relaxation at all. For me, that includes any screen time – whether it’s a laptop, phone, or social media. I can’t remember ever feeling refreshed after such an activity. That’s why I deliberately turn off all devices on rest days.

Activities That Sometimes Help

Then there are activities that sometimes help, but not always. For me, that includes sports like running or going to the gym. Sometimes I manage to clear my head, but often I think too much and can’t really switch off. Golf can work too, but often my thoughts wander back to my problems.

Activities That Always Help

And then there are activities that always work for me. Spending time with my family, especially my kids, is always a good way to unwind. Today, for example, we had breakfast, went to the pool, and later to the trampoline park. These activities worked great and I could completely relax.

The Right Way to Take Breaks

It’s about being honest with yourself and reflecting on which activities really help clear your head. Find out what truly helps you be in the here and now. For me, it’s often activities that are more interactive and require my full attention.

Conclusion

Breaks are essential for our mental and physical health. Find out which activities really help you relax and consciously integrate them into your daily routine. Be honest with yourself and regularly reflect on what does you good.
