Welcome to Day 49 of the 90-Day Comeback Challenge, where we discuss the topic manager feedbacks & self-reflections. How do reviews work internally at our company? What tips & tricks can I give you for your company, be it as an employee or manager? Find out in this article.

Self-Reviews: Team Member Self-Reflection

In our company, performance reviews are currently underway. First, the team members conducted their self-reviews. Simple questions were asked, such as:

  • What were the important outcomes achieved in the last month?

  • How were the team principles implemented?

  • Self-assessment on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = below average, 5 = exceptional).

Interestingly, many tend to rate themselves above average – a phenomenon also observed with drivers who often consider themselves better than average.

Manager Reviews: My Approach

For the manager reviews, I take about 15 to 20 minutes per direct report. Here are my steps:

  1. Unbiased Approach: I read the self-reviews at the end to avoid being influenced.

  2. Evaluation by Team Principles: Integrity, Resourcefulness, Ownership, Impact, Meritocracy, Candor, and Customer Obsession.

  3. Examples and Results: Concrete examples and their impact on the company are crucial.

Most ratings fall between 2 and 4. Extreme ratings (1 or 5) are rare. Results are very important at the end of the day, although intention and effort also matter.

The Process and Communication

After my evaluation, I read the self-reviews to ensure I haven’t overlooked anything significant. If my assessment differs greatly, I add a note to explain the discrepancy.

The final report is sent to the team member and the HR department. I don’t discuss the reviews in separate one-on-ones but incorporate them into our regular catch-ups. This fosters open discussion and helps strengthen team dynamics.

Conclusion

Feedback is a powerful tool for development. It’s not just about highlighting weaknesses but also recognizing and building on strengths. If you have any questions about this process, feel free to let me know. Tomorrow we continue with exciting topics around product and marketing.
