Should you have a mobile app, web app or both for your application? What do I prioritize most in my company, and why? Find out my thoughts on this important question here.

Mobile App vs. Web App: The Basics

One of the biggest differences between a mobile app and a web app lies in the user experience. A web app, running on a desktop or Mac, offers the advantage of a larger screen and a mouse. This is especially important in the crypto sector, where extensive charts and trading tools are required. On the other hand, a mobile app provides a much simpler user experience. Everything is predefined, and you can precisely control what the user sees and where they click.

Security: An Underestimated Factor

Many people think that mobile devices are less secure. However, the opposite is true. Mobile phones are generally much more secure than desktops. There are fewer viruses for mobile operating systems, and phishing attacks are more challenging to execute. Even if your phone is stolen, it is very difficult to access the device.

Speed and Resources

If you’re just starting and don’t have unlimited resources, a web app might be the quicker route. A web app can be developed quickly and “dirty.” You can even design it to look like a mobile app by packing it into a special iframe, thus bypassing the App Store. However, as you progress, user experience and security become more critical, and this is where the mobile app comes into play.

Target Audience: Who Do You Want to Reach?

The choice between a mobile app and a web app also heavily depends on your target audience. Older users tend to use desktops, while younger users prefer mobile devices. However, if your product heavily depends on the desktop, for instance, due to trading charts, you need to consider a web app.

The Bake Approach

At Bake, we started with a web app in 2019 because it was faster to develop. But as we progressed, we realized that a mobile app was better suited for our needs. Our platform is a one-stop solution for crypto purchases, exchanges, and investments. For such applications, a mobile app is simpler and more secure. Therefore, we have put a strong focus on developing our mobile app.

Conclusion: Your Decision Matters

Ultimately, the decision between a mobile app and a web app depends on many factors: security, user experience, speed, and, last but not least, your target audience. At Cake DeFi, after initially developing a web app, we chose a mobile app to provide our users with the best possible experience.
