I have just returned from a one-week business trip in Europe and have now landed back in Singapore. The time difference is, of course, enormous, and on day 26 of the 90-day comeback challenge, we’re discussing jet lag. How do I deal with it, and what are my personal experiences and tips & tricks? Find out in this article.

Why is Jetlag Such a Big Deal?

Jetlag has always been a challenge for me. I still remember my first trip to America when I was 16 – it completely threw me off. Back then, I wasn’t traveling as much, but now, with all the business trips, I’ve developed some strategies to handle it.

Westward and Eastward Travel – What’s the Difference?

Basically, there are two directions you can travel: westward and eastward. Traveling west, like from Asia to Europe or Europe to America, is easier for many people. For me, it’s the opposite. I’m an early riser and prefer going to bed early, so it’s hard for me to stay awake in the evenings when traveling west. I often wake up in the middle of the night, wide awake – which is far from ideal.

Tips for Traveling Westward

When I travel west, I try to stay awake as long as possible in the evenings. This involves exercising late in the day, hitting the gym, or going to the sauna. Caffeine tablets or green tea also help me stay awake longer. It’s crucial to stay active and avoid falling asleep on the couch.

Tips for Traveling Eastward

Traveling east, like from America to Europe or Europe to Asia, is easier for me. The challenge here is going to bed at night when your body is still awake. In these cases, I sometimes take melatonin or a half sleeping pill to quickly adjust my sleep rhythm. However, I only do this for one or two days to avoid dependency.

General Tips

Regardless of the travel direction, it’s important to establish a good sleep routine. Set an alarm in the morning and get up, even if you’re tired. Cold showers or ice baths help me wake up in the morning. Avoid scheduling important meetings on the first day – give yourself time to adjust.

Conclusion

Jetlag is a challenge, but with the right strategies, you can manage it well. Stay active, use supplements wisely, and find your own rhythm.
