Remote Work as a Team Lead: My Challenges
I’m not a big fan of team leads working remotely away from their teams. It’s easier for me if team members work remotely, but I find it incredibly difficult for team leads. That’s why most of our team leads are based in Singapore, as it’s too challenging for most of them to work remotely.
This week was particularly crucial. We had the major bundle launch for the public, prepared the Ethereum on-ramp, and discussed tax efficiency. Simultaneously, there were many discussions about EU issues with stablecoins. All these tasks required intensive collaboration and quick decisions.
Tips for Remote Work as a Team Lead
1. Over-communicate
My first and most important tip is: over-communicate! As a team lead, you need to communicate extensively. I do almost daily check-ins on Slack, asking my direct reports about their tasks and any blockers they might have. It’s important to stay constantly updated.
2. Quick Meetings
When there are discussions or important conversations, jump into a call as quickly as possible. This can be via phone, WhatsApp, or Google Meet. It’s crucial to quickly exchange energy and interact humanly instead of having long discussions on Slack or via email.
3. Good Employees
For remote work, you need self-sufficient employees who can complete their tasks without constant guidance. It’s crucial that your team members are self-starters who know what to do without needing constant direction.
4. Tracking Tools
Use tracking tools like Trello to monitor work. It’s a balancing act: you don’t want to over-monitor and lose your employees’ trust, but you also need to ensure the work gets done. Find the right mix of control and trust.
