Being a leader or a manager: what should you focus on as an entrepreneur and what are the big differences? Why you need both and good practical examples, in this article.

What is the Difference Between a Leader and a Manager?

You’ve probably seen the common depictions on social media: the leader who leads from the front and inspires, and the manager who sits at the back and drives people. But neither one nor the other is completely correct on its own. You need both.

A leader is someone who leads by example, inspires people, and shows them the way. A manager, on the other hand, manages processes that lead to specific results. Both roles require completely different skills, and it’s rare to find someone who excels in both.

The Role of the Leader

A good leader is like someone who goes into a dark room and lights the candles so that the rest can follow. You lead people, inspire them, and show them the way. This means being the first in the office and the last to leave. It’s about setting big goals and motivating people to achieve them. Books like “Leaders Eat Last” or “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek are great resources to improve your leadership qualities.

The Role of the Manager

Managers manage processes, not people. They ensure that specific goals are achieved, such as revenue, new customers, or sales. This often requires hard facts and numbers. Good managers are rarely inspiring, but they are necessary to keep processes running and to achieve goals. They work with tracking tools, funnels, and performance improvement plans.

Why You Need Both

Especially at the beginning, you need more of the inspiring leader. It’s challenging to be both a good leader and a good manager at the same time. Personally, I see myself as 80% leader and 20% manager. Many in my company are better managers than I am, and that’s a good thing. Large corporations often need strong managers to drive goals forward, while inspiring leaders set the vision.

Reflection and Next Steps

Reflect on what type you are. Are you more of a leader or a manager? Where are your strengths and weaknesses? When hiring people, make sure to find someone who complements your weaknesses. The world needs both strong leaders and strong managers. Think about where you can improve and continue your education. Management courses like Six Sigma can help you improve your management skills, while books and resources on leadership can help you become a better leader.

Conclusion

Let me know what you think about this. Are you more of a leader or a manager? What do you think the world needs more of?

See you tomorrow for Day 28 with product and marketing updates. I wish you a great start to the week!
