Should a CEO also be a speaker? Today I gave a talk at the Greator Festival in Cologne, and I’ve also had speaking gigs from time to time. How does the speaker business actually work, and what lessons do I have for you as an entrepreneur? Find out in this article.
Balancing Between CEO and Speaker
At the beginning of your career, you might be excited about many speaking engagements because you have little stage experience. You say yes to everything, gain practice and exposure. But there comes a point where you must ask yourself: Can I be a good CEO while also speaking at many events? The answer is usually no. You need to prioritize.
The Initial Phase and Finding the Right Balance
In the early phase of your startup or career, it makes sense to accept many speaking opportunities. It gives you the necessary practice and visibility. But over time, you need to be more selective. There are three phases: first, you pay to speak, then it’s a win-win where you pay nothing and get nothing, and eventually, you get paid to speak. Here, you need to be careful not to accept too many gigs and neglect your main business.
Selectivity is Key
For me, it’s super selective. The Greator Festival is my first event since February. It’s crucial to weigh the costs and effort. Travel costs, time commitment – does it fit into your schedule? For me, it worked out well because I was already in Europe. The cost factor was manageable.
The Event’s Reputation
Another important factor is the event’s reputation. Renowned events like the Greator Festival in the German-speaking world help your branding. It’s important to associate with high-quality events. But be cautious not to speak everywhere just because it costs little. The association must be valuable.
Direct Benefit for Your Business
The final point is the direct benefit for your business. Are the right customers there? Can you use the video online? For us, the video will be posted, and the PDF can be downloaded. It’s about gathering customer data and staying in touch. The measurable value for your business is what counts in the end.
Conclusion
It’s important to be selective. Otherwise, you risk becoming a speaker and neglecting your main business. Let me know what you think, write it in the comments. I’m looking forward to your feedback!
